Hereford Cathedral
|
|
| Hereford
Cathedral is built from a red sandstone which gives it an
unusual purple tinge at certain times of the day. It dates
from 1079, although as is often the case there were other
churches on the site before this building was raised. The
last was burned to the ground by the Welsh in 1056. Dedicated
to Mary and Ethelbert, who lost his head courtesy of King
Offa - he of the dyke. The cathedral houses a chained library
and of course the Mappa Mundi - which was just in a case in
a transept until someone said Hang on this could be valuable...
